Joon Sik Kim is a full professor in the Urban Planning and Design Department at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China. He is also a chartered town planner registered in the Royal Town Planning Institute, United Kingdom.
After graduating with a Master of Civic Design (1998) and a Doctor in Philosophy (Town and Regional Planning, 2002), both from the University of Liverpool (UK), he worked as a professional smart city consultant for ten years. He is a transdisciplinary academic in international communities focusing on smart sustainable cities, watershed revitalisation, and geographic information systems.
His cross-disciplinary research unites two strands of recent significant sustainability inquiry: collaborative planning for sustainable watershed revitalisation (academic background); and smart sustainable cities (practical experience). He argues that a collaborative planning approach, as presented in contemporary planning theories, can be applied to, and improve, the practice of sustainable development and smart cities. With his practical experiences in GIS and smart cities, he is concerned about how emerging technologies can be applied in urban development and management in a real-life context. He has been involved in GIS consulting projects for local governments in Korea and smart city projects worldwide.
